SberMobile subscriber base grows 160% in 2025

Russian MVNO SberMobile, run by the bank Sber, said that its subscriber base reached 6.3 million at the end of 2025. That means growth of 160 percent year-on-year, up from 3.9 million at the end of 2024. Services from the MVNO are available in 89 regions across the country.

MTS covers 94,000 households with GPON network in Moscow in 2025

Russian operator MTS covered 94,000 households with its fixed internet network in the city and region of Moscow in 2025, reports Msk.kp.ru. The coverage now reaches over 5.3 million households there. Around 312 km of fibre-optic network was built by the operator there in 2025, and 200 apartment buidlings were connected to the GPON network.

Plus introduces roaming pack for winter sports fans

Polish operator Polkomntel, trading under the Plus brand, introduced a new roaming package for fans of winter sports. The package is available for both prepaid and postpaid customers and is valid in Czechia, Italy, Slovakia, Austria and France. Customers receive a 6 GB package valid for a month, at a cost of PLN 30. The offer will be valid until 30 April.

Slovak online TV service LepsiaTV has expanded its pay TV lineup with the channels 360 Tune Box and Erox HD. Both channels are added to the Classic package, costing EUR 9.59 monthly, as well as the Top package, costing EUR 12.59 monthly.

Meta is promoting board member Dina Powell McCormick to the role of president and vice-chair. Powell McCormick joined the board in April 2025 and counts extensive experience working in global finance and US politics. Her connections are expected to support Meta's plans to build a massive digital infrastructure of data centres and computing power to back the company's vision for the internet and AI.

Peruvians port nearly 6.7 mln lines in 2025

A total of 6.69 million Peruvian mobile users ported their phone number in 2025 as a whole, up 5.4 percent year on year and the highest figure in six years, according to the latest data from telecom regulator Osiptel. Ported postpay lines came to 4.75 million in 2025, accounting for over two-thirds (71.1%) of the total.

Tele2 Latvia blocks record number of digital threats in December

Tele2 Latvia said that it prevented 163 million digital threats on its network in 2025. According to the collected information, fraudsters were particularly active in the last three months of the year, when a total of 68 million threats were prevented. December was a record month, as 26.8 million different types of threats to customers in the digital environment were prevented. According to the operator, on average 4,000 fraudulent calls and 5,000 text messages are blocked on its network every day.

Ghana consults on use of 6 GHz band for Wi-Fi services

Ghana's National Communications Authority (NCA) has launched a public consultation on a proposal to open up the lower 6 GHz band (5,925–6,425 MHz) for Wi-Fi 6 services. The consultation calls for pubic comments until 25 February. The proposal seeks to boost digital growth by authorising unlicensed Wireless Access Systems/Radio Local Area Networks (WAS/RLANs) in the spectrum band.

Atende appoints Nokia manager as new VP

Polish IT company Atende appointed Piotr Kaczmarek vice president of the management board. Kaczmarek comes from Nokia, where he had an over 20-year career working with telecom operators, most recently as senior country officer and network infrastructure partner manager for central and south Europe. In a post on LinkedIn, he said he was "pleased to be able to leverage my experience and expertise to actively contribute to the further development" of Atende.

Bite Latvia to disconnect 3G network in Jurmala, surroundings of Riga

Bite Latvia announced that it plans to switch off its 3G network in the coastal resort of Jurmala, as well as in the Kekava, Marupe and Olaine municipalities, outside the capital city. The network will be disconnected by 21 January, and the released radio frequencies will be allocated to LTE and 5G networks. In 2025, Bite Latvia disconnected its 3G network in numerous cities, towns and municipalities in the Zemgale, Vidzeme, Kurzeme and Latgale regions.

Play offers promo of 5G smartphone contracts

Polish operator Play, controlled by Iliad, started s a promotion of 5G smartphones in its shops. Up to 50 percent discounts are offered to customers buying devices and connecting to S+, M, L or Homebox plans from the operator using number porting. That means the Xiaomi 15T Pro 5G costs PLN 1,799 instead of PLN 3,599, the Samsung Galaxy S25 FE 5G is reduced to PLN 1,499 from PLN 2,999, and the Motorola Edge 60 Pro 5G is offered for PLN 1,199 instead of PLN 2,399. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 14 Pro is down to PLN 5

English students to access GCSE results on new mobile app

The UK government has announced the launch of the 'Education Record' app in England to upgrade how children access their exam results. The app will allow Year 11 students to view their GCSE results on their mobile phones for the first time from summer 2026. The national roll-out follows a trial of the app in the West Midlands and Greater Manchester.

Polish president vetoes law implementing DSA

Polish president Karol Nawrocki has vetoed a law implementing the EU's Digital Services Act (DSA) in the country. The president claims that this law, de facto, means implementation of censorship. The Ministry of Digitisation responded with a statement saying the law is focused on expanding citizen rights against digital corporations and the fight against illegal online content.

Egypt's mobile phone subscription rise 9% in Q3

The number of mobile phone subscriptions in Egypt increased by 8.75 percent year on year to 120.85 million in September 2025 from 111.12 million in 2024, according to statistics from the ICT ministry. Mobile penetration rose to 109.22 percent from 102.14 percent, up by 7.08 percentage points.

KPN reports jump in online meeting traffic during winter storms

KPN said online meeting traffic on its broadband network was 40 percent higher in the past week than the average traffic in the 12 weeks prior. This was attributed to more people working from home due to the snow in the Netherlands. The operator said there was a clear peak in video calls and online meetings, with outgoing internet traffic also up an average 12 percent. On 07 January, upload traffic was over a fifth (22%) higher than a normal Wednesday.

Fastweb Digital Academy initiative tops 1 mln participants

Italian operator Fastweb + Vodafone said the Digital Academy initiative launched by Fastweb back in 2016 has reached the milestone of one million participants since its inception. In terms of economic impact, the numerous free courses offered by the online academy generated a benefit for the country of over EUR 7 million in 2025 alone, resulting in the programme receiving the "Impact Award" at the 2025 CSR and Social Innovation Fair.

AirInternet names new CEO

AirInternet announced that Ralph Rademakers has become CEO from the start of 2026. He previously led international sales at the Dutch operator and has helped expanded the group's operations with strategic partnerships in Europe. The company specialises in private 4G/5G network connections for business customers. It started in 2016 as a MVNO and has since expanded to 14 countries and over 50 reseller partners.

Vodafone UK starts selling Honor Magic8

Vodafone UK is now selling the Honor Magic8 Series, including the Magic8 Pro and Lite smartphones. The Honor Magic8 Pro is available from GBP 50 per month (GBP 40 upfront), with the Magic8 Lite available from GBP 24 per month (GBP 20 upfront).

MTN South Sudan expects to complete Yambio upgrade by end of January

MTN South Sudan says network upgrade following ongoing service disruptions in Yambio will be completed by the end of January. The disruption was caused by its network modernisation project aimed at upgrading the area to a 4G network. The company extended an apology to affected customers for any inconvenience during this transition.

Vodafone Netherlands has launched three different unlimited mobile data plans. With speeds up to 1 Gbps over 5G, the plans differ in the amount of call minutes and roaming allowances. They are available for both consumer and business customers, with the latter also getting extra security and connectivity options.

Altice revives OXG Glasfaser stake sale process - report

Telecom billionaire Patrick Drahi is reviving the process to sell Altice's 50 percent stake in its German fibre-optic expansion joint venture, OXG Glasfaser, according to a report in the FT. The other 50 percent of the venture is in the hands of Vodafone.  According to the FT, Drahi has sent teaser documents to potential buyers in recent weeks as he is keen to divest the stake to reduce debt amounting to more than USD 50 billion.
